LEGO 3D-rig for stop-motion animation

As promised earlier this year, it is about time to share our LEGO 3D rig, build out of „technic“ bricks. The only thing „non-LEGO you will need, is a base plate for your digital camera. You can use (almost) everyone from any tripod you own already, buy a new one, or order it online – like this one from Manfrotto. In the model the base plate is represented by the transparent LEGO plate „hovering“ on top.

Now some advice and hints on the model.

iPad 2 Pod

I love LEGO since… well forever, I guess. It’s with me since early childhood days, and I passed the virus on to my son, who last year started to make his first steps with stop-motion animation. He handled my professional equipment so well, but for obvious reasons (I happen to need it for work) does not have access to it, whenever he would like to play around. That’s not ok. Since we own an iPad 2, we came up with an alternative solution we would like to share:

Alternatively, here is the LegoDigitalDesigner-File: LDD-iPad-2-Pod (right click and „Save as“, you know)

We did also build a LEGO-3D-Rig and will post instructions and examples later this year, but first some further explanations on this one.

The Game is On

I know I shouldn’t do this. But I can’t help it. This is my blog after all. So I find myself again writing on one of my absolute favorite TV-series in the language it was written and shot in. It’s been a while since I did a similar thing with BREAKING BAD, and hopefully I’ve learned my lesson there well, how easy it is to hurt somebodies feeling, just by sharing your own thoughts. So please, dear fans out there, nothing of what I will put down here is meant to decrease your enjoyment of one of the currently best shows on TV: GAME OF THRONES.

Peter Dinklage in Season 2 of HBO’s series GAME OF THRONES

What’s different this time is, that GAME OF THRONES happens to be an adaptation of a series of novels. And in anticipation of the start of season 2 I did the „mistake“ to start reading the books. Damn. I should have known better. I should have guessed. I got into trouble. Deep, deep trouble. Because I couldn’t stop. Even worse, I had to almost „work“ myself though them, because otherwise I wouldn’t be able to return to my own work anymore. Ever. Again. I would be even more distracted than I already was. And now, finally, I am about to finish A DANCE WITH DRAGONS, the most recent available book, number 5 in the 7(+x) volume series, my head starts to be clearer, and it looks like I will get my life back.

X-Wing and T-Fighter in 8bit-LEGO-Sideways-Design

Because my last post was a rant on Star Wars (in German language only) I felt a bit bad, so I thought it would be appropriate to share something positive about the old trilogy, in LEGO. Precisely in 8bit(or „brick“ so to speak)-LEGO-Sideways-Design. This is something I enjoy doing more and more. The idea is, to build anything with the most basic bricks available, and as small as possible. And with moving parts. Or „round“ shapes. Simply everything you can imagine. That’s what an X-Wing could look like in 8BLSD:

The upper two wings are movable, like they should be.

Here are the building instructions: X-Wing version 1 or in a new window/tab or as a LegoDigitalDesigner-File: LDD-X-Wing version 1 (right click and „Save as“)

After the click some variations and the counterpart of the bad guys.
